Beef and barley soup |
Beef and barley soup is a rich
and soothing dish with a long history that is steeped in many culinary
traditions.
For thousands of years, barley
has been farmed and has been a staple crop in many cultures. It has been used
in soups since ancient times. Barley was a frequent component in many meals,
particularly soups, in ancient Rome. The Roman army even served soldiers a
barley soup called "puls" as a healthy and full diet.
Beef has been consumed as a
protein source throughout history. Beef stews and soups were popular in many
civilizations because they allowed for the use of tougher types of meat that
could be tenderized via slow simmering.
